Managing multiple health care appointments and health concerns can be difficult. If you feel overwhelmed by the number of doctors and specialists you see, unsure what questions to ask or nervous during appointments, know that you are not alone. These five strategies can change your provider visits into productive and stress-free experiences.

  1. Preparation is key

The first step is to prepare for your appointment. Think about what you want to discuss and gather relevant information.

  • Make a list of questions. Brainstorm with your family or friends to come up with a list of the most important concerns affecting your daily life.
  • Identify your priorities. Determine the health goals and challenges that matter most to you.
  • Know your care team. Familiarize yourself with your primary care provider, specialists and any other health care professionals involved in your care.
  1. Gather essentials

Before your appointment, take time to organize everything you might need. Here are a few things to remember:

  • Medication list. Include all medications, even those taken occasionally. Include over-the-counter medications and supplements.
  • Organized folder. Keep important documents like X-rays, CT scans, lab results and medication lists handy.
  1. During the visit

Consider these important ways to make the most of your time with your doctor:

  • Speak up. Share your concerns and take notes during discussions.
  • Discuss barriers. Be open about challenges you face in accessing care or medications. Your doctor can help you find solutions to these challenges.
  • Keep your doctor updated. Let your primary care provider know about upcoming tests or specialist appointments.
  1. After the visit

After your appointment, take action to stay on top of your health. Here are a few strategies:

  • Understand your follow-up plan. Make sure you are clear on any tests, medications or specialist referrals.
  • Request visit summaries. Get copies of your visit summary and any relevant lab reports.
  • Schedule follow-ups. Do not leave without scheduling your next appointment.
  1. You hold the key to your health

The following tips will help you take better control of your health:

  • Be transparent. Share any concerns or symptoms, including mental health issues or lifestyle challenges.
  • Learn how to access after-hours support. Know how to access care outside of regular office hours.
  • Learn about additional support services. Explore services like social work, nutrition counseling or senior centers for extra assistance.

Your health care providers are your allies in your journey to better health. They depend on your input to customize the best care for you. Feel free to ask questions, seek clarity or request extra support whenever necessary.

By actively engaging in your health; you can optimize your doctor visits and work toward a healthier, happier you.
